    • Unexplored Early Symptoms

Posted at 6:18 pm by motherima, on November 20, 2018

The first localized symptom I had when my silicone breast implants had unknowingly ruptured was a lump in my left axilla. A doctor dismissed it, saying it was unrelated to my implants without checking for rupture.

The second localized symptom I had was a mass / thickening in my right axilla. Again it was dismissed without checking for rupture.

Sometime later I noticed what felt like a displaced rib immediately below my left breast. I could move it. When I presented to my doctor I was told it was probably scar tissue that had detached. It wasn’t investigated. On explant it was discovered that it was a large open-ended granuloma where silicone had passed from within the scar capsule surrounding my ruptured implant into my chest wall.

The first non-localized symptoms I had when my left silicone breast implant had unknowingly ruptured were neurological and presented unilaterally, on the same side as rupture. Doctors neither connected the dots, nor checked for rupture. Over years I developed many more symptoms – eventually I was virtually bedridden. Still doctors dismissed any connection to my breast implants and didn’t explore their integrity.

Meanwhile, as I was told the symptoms I was presenting with were unrelated to my silicone breast implants THIS was happening …

      lymph-nodes-masses-2 cropped
      me-mass-4-2

Eventually the localized lumps, lymph nodes and masses were investigated but, it was a case of ‘can’t see the forest for the trees’. It was inadequate to explore the nature of these issues to the exclusion of my breast implants. It would have been prudent to order an ultrasound or MRI to determine if there was rupture.

      Large abcess-like collage cropped rs

One might (rightfully) have expectation that doctors would have at least some comprehension of the possible complications from breast implants and what signs and symptoms to watch for. Also, how to screen for rupture and other complications. It’s unfortunately a mistaken expectation. There are some doctors that are on top of it, but there are many more who aren’t.

I know too many women with scenarios just like mine. In the past few years the worldwide web has made it possible to connect millions of implanted women around the world. Women with breast implants are now often more informed than their doctors. A huge take-away in my personal experience was realizing that I’d known nothing about my breast implants, and I’d put my trust in doctors who knew as little as I did.

BE INFORMED. ASK QUESTIONS. BE PERSISTENT. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY-SPEAK. JOIN SUPPORT FORUMS.

If you have breast implants and develop enlarged lymph nodes, masses or lumps request an ultrasound or MRI to check if your implants might be leaking. It’s recommended to have an MRI (or ultrasound) after the first 3 years and every 2 years subsequently. Even with saline implants the shells are still made of silicone that bleeds chemicals causing localized and systemic responses. If you have textured implants it’s crucial to become informed about the symptoms and protocol for testing for BIA-ALCL (a man-made cancer of the immune system that’s directly linked to breast implants).

    • The ‘Silicone Is In Food’ Spiel

Posted at 8:17 pm by motherima, on November 6, 2018

      silicone in foods 2 rs

Doctors tell women that breast implants are safe, and in an effort to reinforce this position they often state that silicone is in many foods and medicines. The understood implication is that ‘therefore silicone is obviously safe’.

Silicon is in some foods, but silicon and silicone are two very different things. Silicon is naturally occurring / silicone is a synthetic substance.

The term ‘silicone’ has the connotation of being a single substance; however, it is a complex combination of ingredients which includes toxic chemicals and heavy metals.

WHY WOULD THEY PUT SILICONE IN FOODS AND MEDICINES? It surely isn’t to benefit consumers. It is purely profit over safety and lining pockets of BIG BUSINESS. Of course, profiting Big Business is the reason breast implants exist also.

      Dirt Committee copy

In her book, ‘Breast Implants and the D.I.R.T. Committee’, author Gail Hamilton, includes an ingredient list (obtained through a court case of a woman who had become ill from her silicone implants) (pg 4-5):

That list surely doesn’t leave me feeling that I’d be ok eating it!

On page 47: “Internal company documents, however, later revealed that Dow Corning knew as early as the 1950s that the silicone used in breast implants was ‘bioreactive, immunogenic, toxic and inflammatory in the human body’.”

Here’s another manufacturer ingredient list contained in court documents and included in the book, ‘The Naked Truth About Breast Implants’, by Dr Susan Kolb (pg 83-84):
      Methyl ethyl ketone (neurotoxin)
      Cyclohexanone (neurotoxin)

      Platinum salt, known as hexachloroplaninate:
In the book, ‘The Boobie Trap’ by Barbara Stanistreet, on page 184 she writes: “Dr Harbut had made plain to me that the occupational medicine literature is emphatic that no one should come into contact with platinum salts, that there is no safe limit for exposure to platinum salts, and that any amount of platinum salt exposure is too much.”

      http://theboobietrap.com

Again from the book, ‘Breast Implants and the D.I.R.T. Committee’, Gail Hamilton writes on page 13 regarding silicone having been explored for use as a pesticide:
      COCKROACH STUDY
“In an internal Dow Corning memo ’Dow Corning 360 Fluid’ is mentioned as the base ingredient used to make chemical gel implants. It was also tested as a pesticide and found to kill cockroaches. The memo said, “Cockroaches were attracted to the Petri dish with silicone fluid. After coming out of the fluid, they never got more than a few inches before dying.””

DOCTORS REALLY NEED TO THINK THE ‘SILICONE IS IN FOOD’ PARTY LINE THROUGH! AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY, BUT AN APPLE INFUSED WITH THE COCKTAIL OF CHEMICALS LISTED ABOVE, AND INGESTED, WILL LAND YOU IN THE ER, OR WORSE. ((Thinking caps ON please Docs!))
      Infuse apple w chemicals rs
Qualifying comment: Obviously an apple can’t be compared to a breast implant! .. but, on the theme of silicone in foods. Hopefully silicone used in foods and medicines doesn’t contain the same chemicals that are used in making breast implants. We deserve to know the truth – ALL ingredients used in, and in the making of breast implants; and the same for silicone used in foods and medicines.

DOCTORS ALSO NEED TO TELL WOMEN UP FRONT THAT THEY MIGHT END UP WITH MIGRATED SILICONE IN THEIR LYMPH NODES, AS WELL AS OTHER NEAR AND DISTANT PLACES, AND IT WILL REMAIN EVEN AFTER THEIR BREAST IMPLANTS ARE REMOVED. Because never mind ingesting silicone – it might be mixing with blood, lymph, tissues and organs in an antagonistic, toxic lifelong ‘health altering’ relationship.

BREAST IMPLANTS DON’T SIT INERTLY IN THE BODY.IMG_6342

Silicone used in breast implants causes an acute inflammatory response that’s completely manmade and doesn’t exist anywhere outside of having breast implants. Also, silicone is an ‘adjuvant‘ which when used in medicines accelerates, enhances and prolongs the normal response of a drug or substance. For women who are sensitive to silicone that translates to an even more nightmarish experience with their implants.

And let’s not forget biofilms. There’s not just need to know what’s IN breast implants, we need to know what they can do once they’re placed within a human body. Biofilms lead to chronic inflammation, which leads to autoimmune illness and cancer.

The point of this blog post is to encourage critical thinking – for both patients and doctors. To challenge things presented as fact that are actually myth or misconstrued information. The picture we get when a doctor tells us breast implants are safe because ‘silicone is used in foods and medicines’ is one of ‘devices that are perfectly safe’ .. even safe to ingest (they’re NOT). However, if we’re informed about the chemicals in silicone used in breast implants we end up with a completely different picture – and we can challenge (and correct) such an erroneous statement. If a doctor tries the ‘silicone is safe because its in foods’ spiel on you, suggest you’d feel more convinced if they took a bite of a breast implant to prove it. See what he/she says.

NOTE: I highly recommend the books ‘Breast Implants and the D.I.R.T. Committee’ and ‘The Boobie Trap’.

    • October 29, 2018 – My 5th Explant Anniversary

Posted at 4:48 am by motherima, on October 29, 2018

5th Explant Anniversary 2018 healed RS

Today, October 29, 2018, is my 5th explant-anniversary – the day my toxic silicone breast implants were removed from my body. I woke up from my explant surgery with the greatest sense of happiness and relief .. I REJOICED and haven’t stopped REJOICING!!!!!

I know I keep saying it every year, but this date is more important to me than my birthday. It was so important to me not to die with those freaking things still in me .. and surely if they hadn’t been removed I wouldn’t still be here.

I had RECALLED devices in me for 22 years (unknowingly) and had undiagnosed rupture for 16 years. Because I had such long standing rupture I experienced extensive silicone migration. My health is permanently impacted. The migrated silicone can’t be removed. All I can do is use my experience and voice to help prevent others from being harmed by breast implants.

If you have breast implants please be informed about the signs of device failure and the MANY ways they can ruin your health.

A couple friends that watched me get sicker and sicker suggested many times that they thought it might be my implants that were making me sick. The doctors I presented to with symptoms said my implants categorically had nothing to do with what was happening – even localized things like enlarged lymph nodes and masses. Fast forward to when I found out my implants were ruptured, I connected online with some ladies that had walked this road before me. I was shocked to learn that I had classic symptoms for rupture and breast implant related illness. Women since breast implants were introduced in the early 60’s have become sick in the exact same ways .. YET, our REAL WORLD EVIDENCE has been denied by the very people who profit from them.

Now, as the truth is emerging more and more, there are doctors that are acknowledging the correlation. Many, before becoming fully convinced, simply ‘noticed’ as their patients improved once their implants were removed. A common statistic reported is 80%-85% of patients either fully regain their health, or at least experience significant improvement. Countless women have migrated silicone that can’t be removed, which continues to act as an antagonist in our body and undermines our health. In recent years there’s also been focus on ‘biofilms’ which can cause serious illness and even death.

Breast Implant Related Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BII-ALCL) has gotten media attention in recent years, though the industry tried their hardest to minimize the incidence rate. Now that they’re testing for it, more cases are being diagnosed. I think there’s zero doubt that women have died from this, and other forms of lymphoma and other cancers, without having been diagnosed.

Healing from breast implants isn’t a straight trajectory for most women. I still have some residual issues, but many things have either fully resolved or greatly improved. My lungs and kidneys are permanently buggered, and I have multiple silicone filled lymph nodes, lesions, and masses. I have silicone deeply within my chest wall. It hurts 24/7. The nature of the pain is acute. I have limited mobility / ability / strength with my arms and hands, especially on the left side. The worst way it impacts me is in my inability to hold my grandchildren for long, and some days I can barely pick them up. THAT breaks my heart. Every upper body movement hurts my ribs because I have silicone in the muscles between my ribs (some of the muscles were removed at the time of explant, as was part of my left pec muscle).

If you have breast implants and feel you’re not being impacted negatively by them .. I’m sorry to say, you are. Even in regard to chest wall destruction. NOBODY gets out of having breast implants unscathed. NOBODY. PERIOD.

      sure fire way 2 rs
Women with breast implants are not expecting the devices they’ve been told are ‘safe’ can ruin their health. Within days after my implants were removed the ‘butterfly rash’ on my face and rash on my torso and extremities were gone. NO-ONE is unscathed by breast implants – its a matter of degree.

What’s shocking is that even when I was virtually bedridden and manifesting a long list of health issues doctors still thought there was nothing wrong with me. Even localized lumps, masses and enlarged lymph nodes were discounted as ‘nothing’.

Since I was explanted in 2013 the medical community is slowly becoming more receptive  to the negative impact breast implants can have. Its through us sharing our stories and photos that the shift is happening. Please keep sharing your experience!

    • Susan’s Story

Posted at 4:58 pm by motherima, on October 11, 2018

Susan first presented with sudden swelling in her right breast in April 2017. Then in August 2017 her left breast swelled suddenly. She’d experienced swelling on the left side in three separate instances by the time her implants were removed in November 2017. On each occasion doctors failed to test the seroma fluid for Breast Implant Associated Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

I have walked with Susan through every step of her journey to find answers. The degree to which her medical care has been botched at every turn is simply staggering. The Canadian medical system has failed her completely. Every hopeful moment where she thought she might finally get answers was quickly dashed by another failure of the medical system.

It has been a roller coaster ride, with a cocktail of emotions. Its been agonizing, frustrating, disappointing, scary, angering, shocking, abysmal, and so much more.

When Susan’s breast implants were removed she was told they were smooth saline and she was shown a photo of implants that looked like new. Given when she’d gotten the implants in March 2006 she’d been told she had been implanted with textured silicone implants she didn’t believe they were hers and said so. Her experience of trying to find out definitively what implants she’d been implanted with has been as convoluted and sketchy as the medical ‘care’ she received. Freedom of Information requests from Health Canada produced conflicting documents. She missed her calling as a ‘sleuth’ IMHO. Pure tenacity and perseverance led to finally having her explanted breast implants returned to her, and discovering that they were: McGhan Intrasheil barrier – ‘special access’ implants. The silicone implants were obtained during the 10 year moratorium on silicone breast implants.

Nineteen months after the first onset of swelling, and through continued symptoms Susan still doesn’t have answers for what’s going on.

Recently Susan started making videos to share her story and educate others. Here are her first videos:

**Qualifying comment: At this time it hasn’t been confirmed whether the object Susan suspects is a synthetic layer of her implant that’s detached is an accurate assumption, or if it’s actually scar capsule. **

Please note: Silicone can migrate throughout the body, including to vital organs. An autopsy done on a Danish woman who’s implants were not ruptured showed she had silicone in virtually every part of her body. Women getting breast implants are not usually informed of this possible complication. When we get implants we don’t expect we can end up with silicone in lymph nodes, lungs, brain, liver, ovaries, chest wall muscles and surrounding tissue, to list a few places. Even when breast implants are removed many women are left with residual silicone which has migrated beyond the reach of a surgeon’s scalpel.

This annual memorial event was created in remembrance of women who’ve lost their lives after having breast implants.

Since the first memorial event on September 25, 2017 more women from our breast implant illness community have died. And many others are so ill they fear they may not live until their implants are removed.

    • Self-Rejection – Let’s Talk About It

Posted at 5:27 pm by motherima, on April 11, 2018

Pregnancy and breast feeding are two of life’s most beautiful experiences. I actually consider them sacred.

Sadly, they’re also life events that can precipitate a new layer of self-rejection that leads many women to undergo cosmetic surgeries.

Our body goes through changes with pregnancy and breast feeding – sometimes significantly so. When breasts sag and stomach skin is stretched it can lead to a self-esteem crisis and self-rejection. Women often feel pressured to live up to the media standard of ‘forever youthful’ and ‘forever perfect’ and want their pre-pregnancy body back. Many women opt to undergo breast augmentation, ’mommy make-over’ and other cosmetic procedures.

PREGNANCY & NURSING NEW 3 RS

Most women get breast implants without being fully aware of the dangers, even when they’ve done research. Women are still being duped by the same ‘breast implants are safe’ pitch that I was when I got implants. Nobody gets out of having breast implants unscathed. Changes within the chest wall are inevitable; and other complications likely, especially with time.

Most of the women I know who became sick from their implants (bii), and/or experienced device failure, expressed after their implants were removed that they wish they’d loved themselves more prior to getting implants. Seeing their ‘pre-breast-implants’ breasts in photos (after losing their health to implants), they finally ‘get’ that they were beautiful as they were. Their breasts with implants usually looked fake, and misshapen, but the worst part is that many women ended up so sick they weren’t able to participate as a ‘mom’ in their children’s lives.

How did toxic sacs of chemicals become more acceptable than breasts which have sustained life?

Women feel more pressure than men, in general, to fit a media ideal. I hope we’ll begin having conversations about the pressures women face in regard to self-esteem, self-rejection and the trend toward plastic surgery. Quick-fixes come with a cost.

    • Breast Implants From My Children’s Eyes

Posted at 7:26 am by motherima, on April 11, 2018

When I got my silicone breast implants I have to honestly confess I’d not thought about how, or if, me getting them might impact my children. Neither negatively, nor positively. I was told they were ‘safe’ and would sit inertly in my body for the rest of my life. I didn’t consider anything beyond that.

In retrospect it was naive and ill-thought-out.

My youngest, a daughter, was 4 years old. The other three kids, two sons and a daughter, were a tween and two teenagers.

It would take nearly 22 years before I was struck by what felt like a complete lapse in judgement. I suddenly became painfully aware my children had not been unaffected. I realized they’d had to internalize and process their feelings on their own.

Growing up, the not-at-all-subtle message of media imaging, and that of their own mother who’s fake breasts sat as neon sign ‘events’ on top of my chest, created confusion and self-esteem issues.

What was the message of my breast implants to them?
      – Did they feel having large breasts defined what it means to be a ‘woman’? After all, most women in magazines, on TV, and in movies and videos had breast implants, and I mirrored and reinforced that message.
      – That I wasn’t ‘enough’ without breast implants? I’d rejected my breasts that had changed through pregnancy and nursing, trading them for plastic sacs.
      – That they can’t be enough without them either? If my real breasts weren’t enough for me, how could their breasts be enough?
      – Were they embarrassed by me having breast implants? Did their friends tease them about it?

The thing is that I didn’t have conversations with them about it. I should have. I likely would have had them removed long before I did if we’d talked about their experience of me having them. We didn’t have those conversations until my implants were removed, and it was heartbreaking to hear what it had been like for them.

Besides the message that me having breast implants gave them, another aspect I didn’t consider of their experience (of a mother with plastic breasts) was what hugs would feel like. My heart broke when I realized after getting implants that I couldn’t feel my children against my heart anymore. My heart broke even more hearing what it had been like for them. Their experience of hugging me was a barrier of two cold, impersonal ‘beachballs’ between us.

I wish I’d understood the impact of me having breast implants would have on my children.

what remained in my left implant
Photo above: What remained in my ‘left’ silicone breast implant

What did it take for my breast implants to end up like that?

      1. Failure by Health Canada and my implanting plastic surgeon to notify me that the breast implants I got were RECALLED within a year of getting them.
      2. Health Canada licensing such high risk devices.
      3. Local specialists, including a general surgeon and two gynaecologists dismissing localized lumps, masses and enlarged lymph nodes as NOT being related to my implants, over a 16 year period.
      4. Willful Blindness on the part of a local surgeon that didn’t want to get involved.
      5. Me knowing NOTHING about my breast implants.
      6. Me putting trust in doctors that knew nothing about my breast implants.

BE INFORMED .. and LISTEN TO YOUR BODY-SPEAK

Women that have breast implants should:
      – Know signs and symptoms of device failure and breast implant illness.
      – Have the integrity of their implants checked, following manufacture and FDA recommendations (MRI 3 years after being implanted, and every 2 years subsequently). My rupture was diagnosed by ultrasound; MRI confirmed rupture and showed where the silicone, from extra capsular rupture, was within me.
